Camping Prep for Member’s Gem Lakes Trip

Embark on a breathtaking adventure in the heart of central Saskatchewan, where nature unveils its precious gems—Jade, Opal, Diamond, and Sapphire Lakes, collectively known as Gem Lakes. These pristine bodies of water are not only named after precious stones but also mirror their brilliance, offering a unique haven for backcountry campers seeking an escape into the wild.

We will be headed there for our Member’s Only Camping Excursion September 7th-9th!

About Gem Lakes

Gem Lakes, situated in northern Saskatchewan, boast unparalleled clarity and a mesmerizing display of colours reflecting off the water’s surface. What sets them apart is their mysterious origin—these lakes have no inlets or outlets, relying solely on underground aquifers to sustain their crystal-clear beauty. This natural phenomenon creates an oasis for outdoor enthusiasts, where the untamed wilderness meets the tranquility of pristine lakes.

A 5.5-kilometer hiking trail winds its way around the Gem Lakes, providing an enchanting journey for hikers and backpackers. The trail not only offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape but also connects each of the four lakes, allowing campers to explore the unique features of Jade, Opal, Diamond, and Sapphire.

Be Prepared For

Before you embark on the adventure of a lifetime at Gem Lakes, it’s essential to be well-prepared for the unique backcountry setting. Here’s what you need to know to make the most of your excursion:

  1. Disconnect from the Modern World:
Gem Lakes offer a true escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Embrace the tranquility as there is no electricity, ensuring an uninterrupted connection with nature.
  2. Embrace the Silence:
Prepare to be in areas with no cell service. Take this opportunity to fully engage with your surroundings and fellow campers. Share stories, play games, and relish the simplicity of life without constant notifications.
  3. Back to Basics:
Gem Lakes provide an authentic backcountry experience, meaning no bathrooms or running water. Leave no trace and preserve the pristine environment.
  4. Team Up for Comfort:
With a minimum of two people per tent, collaboration is key. It’s highly recommend that you attend our member’s events to connect with your fellow campers, allowing you to choose your tent mates wisely. Sharing the experience enhances the adventure and fosters a sense of camaraderie.

As you prepare for your Gem Lakes excursion, remember that embracing the simplicity of backcountry living is part of the charm.

Bear Country

We will be camping in bear country.  To stay and feel safe: carry bear spray in an easily accessible location, hike in groups of multiple people and make lots of noise to avoid an unexpected encounter. Bear bells are a no-no as they’ve recently been proven to attract bears (and cougars) with curiosity.

Expectations

It’s looking like we’re going to have a great group for this trip! A few things to keep in mind for this one!

Carpool

Gem Lakes is a small part of Narrow Hills Provincial Park and therefore parking is limited! It’s an absolute must that we carpool and that you submit your license plate at least a week before we depart.

Sharing the experience

Since we have a full group, we will be sharing tents and campsites, you will be able to pick your own tent-buddies and campsites will be assigned. Spitting and sharing gear is highly encouraged as it will cut down on how much needs to be hiked in and back out.

Always use the buddy system at night and once the itinerary is in place, please respect the timing.

Leave no Trace

Please pack out everything that you pack in. That means no toilet paper left in the woods, wrappers or food debris. Also keep in mind that this one will be a dog-free and smoke/vape-free event.

Itinerary

Arrive to the parking lot with enough time to be ready to hike in to our sites together at 11am on Saturday September 7th.
