I used to be painfully shy, afraid to speak up, did my best to be invisible in a group. And I had chosen photography as my career — kind of a tough industry to be in if you don’t like eyes on you. Somehow with a camera in my hand, it became a shield and I was fine when I had it. But the rest of the time, I was still someone who preferred to be behind the scenes.
I realized that’s not actually who I wanted to be. I wanted to speak up, I wanted to go out and do fun things that made life exciting. I started traveling solo, reading self help books, getting to the gym on the regular, taking leadership classes, walking on fire with Tony Robbins. SO much stuff!
Here was the turning point: I was at a photography workshop in NYC with a photographer that I idolized and started to see as a friend. We were at the wrap up party and he sat down next to me and said, “Crystal, –why are you SO shy?” My response was, I’m not shy, I’m just quiet.
But he was not wrong. Looking back at even just this workshop, I was afraid to try– the whole point of being there was to try new things, be bad at it so you could be better at it and I couldn’t bring myself to try to be new at something.
And I knew I did not want to go through life as the girl people only knew as shy.
It’s been a journey and there’s still sticky spots in my confidence but I’m taking note and celebrating when I do things that even just months ago, I wouldn’t have felt comfortable doing. It’s a lifelong process — growing your confidence and self-esteem. It’s a muscle to build.
So here we are, this program itself is a celebration! I have pulled together 52 weeks of lessons and tasks that will help you feel more powerful within yourself so that you can decide who you really want to be.
